XII. Twenty-Year Oakland Homicide Trends

  • While the number of homicides may seem high, the level of homicides in Oakland in 2002 and 2003 was actually slightly below the average over the past twenty years. In both years, 27 homicides were committed per 100,000 Oakland residents, compared to a twenty-year average of 30 homicides per 100,000 residents.
  • In 1992, Oakland homicides reached a peak of 44 per 100,000 residents.

*The UCR definition of homicide varies slightly from the definition that the Oakland Police Department uses in their year-end reports. As a result, annual homicide totals in Table 12 and Figure 12 differ from those used in previous tables.
